Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about this tool, calculation methods, and privacy.

1Why is my actual download speed slower than my ISP package?

Internet service providers advertise bandwidth in Megabits per second (Mbps), while file sizes are measured in MegaBytes (MB). Because 1 Byte = 8 bits, a 100 Mbps connection maxes out theoretically at 12.5 MB/s. Furthermore, network protocol overhead (TCP/IP packet headers, latency, and Wi-Fi congestion) typically reduces real-world throughput by 5% to 15%.

2What is the difference between Mbps and MB/s?

Mbps (with a lowercase b) stands for Megabits per second, commonly used for network transfer speeds. MB/s (with a capital B) stands for Megabytes per second, commonly used for storage capacity and download file progress. Divide Mbps by 8 to convert to MB/s.

3Does this calculator factor in real-world packet overhead?

Yes. Slifto applies an industry-standard 10% TCP/IP protocol overhead buffer by default so your estimated download time accurately reflects real-world conditions rather than impossible laboratory speeds.
